What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is surgically placed in the jawbone to support dental restorations. Placing an implant typically requires two surgeries, with about three to six months of healing time in between. Dr. Davis refers his patients to trusted oral surgeons who perform the necessary surgeries. During the initial surgery, an incision is made in the gums, and a small pilot hole is drilled into the jaw bone. The implant is inserted, and the gum is stitched closed over the top. Over the next several months, a process called osseointegration takes place, and the implant becomes permanently fused to the jaw. Once this process is complete, you will return for a second surgery. Another incision is placed in the gums and special abutments are connected to the implants. This serves as the point of connection with your crown or dentures. The gums are then stitched closed in a manner that leaves the abutments standing above the gum line. Once the gums have healed, Dr. Davis can begin creating your restorations.
Dental Implant Candidates
The best candidates for dental implants are non-smokers who have healthy gums and adequate bone mass in their jaws. If you have waited a long time to address a missing tooth, the jaw bone may have begun to atrophy, or lose bone mass. In this case, a bone graft may be performed to restore bone mass needed to accommodate an implant.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants provide a wealth of benefits, especially for those who need dentures. Traditional dentures rest on the gums, held in place with a mild adhesive, but prone to shift when eating or speaking. Implant-supported dentures, on the other hand, are every bit as secure as a set of natural teeth. With dental implants, you can continue eating all the tough, sticky, and chewy foods you love, and you can smile and speak with complete confidence. Meanwhile, dental implants halt the loss of bone mass that occurs in the absence of tooth roots. Dental implants are an excellent investment in your oral health, and your quality of life.
